Torchlight is an action role-playing game developed by Runic Games, published by Perfect World Entertainment, Inc. and Encore, Inc, released for Windows in October 2009. A port for Mac OS X will be released subsequent to the Windows version.
The fantasy-themed game is set in the fictional town of Torchlight and the expansive caverns and dungeons nearby, which adventurers explore to collect valuable loot and battle hordes of monsters.
Development of the game is led by Travis Baldree, designer of Fate, and Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer, co-designers of Diablo and Diablo II, joined by the team that developed Mythos.
GameplayThe player controls a lone hero who explores a series of randomized (procedurally-generated) dungeons, where they fight large numbers of enemies and collect equipment, gold, and other loot. The game also features a single town which serves as a hub, to which the player can periodically return to buy and sell items to NPC vendors and obtain quests. As the player delves into the dungeon, they are presented with a series of quests and battle a series of unique bosses that advance the main storyline. Optionally, players may take on side quests, random quests and visit branching dungeon areas. The graphics are 3D and viewed from an overhead perspective, similar to the isometric perspective used in the original Diablo. The game is controlled using a point-and-click mouse interface and keyboard hotkeys.
Game Features:- Randomization – Our level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure is unique. Monsters, treasures, puzzles, and items are also different each time you embark on an adventure.
- Easy, approachable interface – Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning. The intuitive interface gives players easy access to a rich and varied world.
- Retirement System – Once characters are sufficiently leveled up, they can “retire” and bestow specific benefits and perks to new characters.
- Pets – Players will choose a pet to accompany them. Pets can level up along with the player, and will help in battle, carry items, and perform a variety of helpful services.
- Character Classes – Players will create and customize a character and choose an animal companion. Through cosmetic choices, skill path decisions, and the treasures they acquire, each character will be custom-tailored and different.
- Fishing – Players can take a break from the high-energy pace of adventuring to visit one of the fishing holes and relax and see what they can catch. Fish have interesting benefits for the player and pet, and other rewards can also be discovered
- Editor – Runic Games is embracing our modding community by providing an editor so our players can create and design their own content.

The game generates each level of the dungeon by assembling modular "chunks" of the game environment. Each chunk is designed by hand and may be composed of multiple rooms. They can contain scripted events and interactive objects such as levers that open secret doors or cause bridges to move.[10] This approach to level generation is intended to create dungeons with more purposeful design, instead of environments that simply look like "crossword puzzles that have been extruded upwards."
As in Fate, players have a permanent pet which fights alongside them and can carry and sell loot. The initial pet can be either a wolf dog or a lynx, and players can use items to transform their pet into different creatures.
Also present in the game is a retirement system, in which players can pass on an heirloom item from an old character to a newly-created one, likened to a New Game Plus game mode.
[edit] Character classes

Torchlight features three character classes.
- The Destroyer is a heavy melee warrior who also has the ability to call upon ancestral spirits.
- The Alchemist is a spellcaster drawn to magical power of Ember. He can fire blasts of magic and electricity from his specialized focus glove and can summon imps and steampunk-styled robots.
- The Vanquisher is an elite city guard, sent undercover to investigate the town of Torchlight. She specializes in muskets and pistols, and can dual-wield ranged and melee weapons.
The player develops their character by placing points into class-specific skill trees. Further, there is a separate class of spells that characters can learn from items.
